Chamber Chat October 17, 2007

In 1972, Soroptimist International of Sedro-Woolley, a volunteer organization for business and professional women had a great idea:  Open a thrift shop for the community.  Their first location on State Street had a huge walnut tree in the back so a group of club members that included Bee Johnson thought it would be a great name for their new venture.  Thanks to their hard work and vision, these remarkable women created a Sedro-Woolley institution:  The Walnut Tree.  Since its inception, hundreds of thousands of dollars generated from the “Tree” have been given back to the community in the form of scholarships for deserving students and donations to worthy causes throughout the region. They are growing and will have a grand re-opening on October 18th at noon as they are adding roughly 1/3 more space for merchandise.  Call us for more information about this exciting event. The Skagit Women’s Alliance and Network will be holding its 23rd annual banquet October 18th at McIntyre Hall.  Many members of this network contribute right here in Sedro-Woolley.  When we received the October issue of Skagit Business Pulse, we were thrilled to see articles featuring Pola Kelley and Connie Miller, two Sedro-Woolley business women.    The exciting part for me was the last paragraph in both articles because you see both of them serve the community as board members for

the Sedro-Woolley Chamber of Commerce.  Not only that, Pola has been the president for the past two years.  The other hard working women that contribute to our board are Kathy Ehman, Jane Rocha, and Susie Price.  Their volunteer service

to the community is one of the reasons it is so vital and dynamic.
